The AGI needn't exist within a 3D virtual word that mimics physical reality of the real world. It is very convenient though.
You can force it into 2 spatial dimensions and provide sufficient complexity for it to operate within. The complexity needn't mimic physical reality it can be some "other" virtual environment. And you can do a lot with most low end video cards in 2D. Also you can interact via API's and protocols to rendering systems running on other machines that you don't know about. You needn't be running the rendering on the same box. The virtual world is like a sophisticated GUI. But it's nice to have a good video card. I'm lucky to have a W7000 though I see the W7100 was just released :) And then there's the..... W9100 behemoth.
