A small box with XLR in and out connectors and no other switches or
connectors.  It's a mic preamp designed to lift the signal of low output
mics out of the noise floor.  Without looking it  up I am not sure how much
gain you get but 24  dB seems close.   Given this additional gain you can
operate your recorder preamps in a more comfortable mid range setting.
