One application that disables the "SAVE" button is: Adobe Acrobat.

I addressed further concerns in another post on the UX-mailing list:
http://ux.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=1638

Please note, I do believe that unnecessary saves will create a number of
problems with:
 - concurrent editing of documents (e.g. new spreadsheet feature)
 - big documents
 - saving over the network (e.g. during my 2nd job I do save documents
on a server in a different country)
 - will divert users attention away from their proper work
   will raise the error rate
(numerous studies, including my auditing activity strongly support
that diverting users attention increases the error rate)
 - will interfere with track changes and traceability of document changes
[in the field I work this is a requirement by EU law]
 - excessive "saves" will interfere with other activities,
e.g. with one of my feature-proposals:
   http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=80909

Adobe Acrobat has the following feature:
 - IF the user does indeed want to save the current document, then there
   is a Menu entry: "Save as";
 - this works always and overwrites the existing document

This is the better approach.
