------- Additional comments from ttre...@openoffice.org Fri Mar 19 20:36:47 +0000 2010 ------- I went to www.java.com and ran the java test this site provides on my Firefox browser. It failed even with the current JRE installed via Synaptic. It pointed me to a more recent version with extremely vague installation instructions-- nothing specific to Debian or Ubuntu, and no .deb packages. I haven't tried this yet. I am busy with other stuff, but I am going to try to see if I can install this today. How come you guys don't know about this? This is all Sun's stuff? Why don't you know what versions are needed for what? Nothing is more mainstream than Ubuntu. I am trying to help you guys get Base functioning and useful here on Ubuntu. I think Base is a well designed DB at its core. The thing that is in the way-- the thing that makes it look bad, are these finish-work details that make it useless to the average user. It looks like a piece of junk. But it actually isn't a piece of junk. It is a well-designed and written piece of software. It is without question a professional db worthy of measure against any other in its class. These ridiculous installation issues make it look like a piece of rinky-dink software, however, and this is a real shame. Who could use Base with these kinds of installation issues? I can't get to the meat of Base itself because I can't get it to install. I have a list of things I want to try in Base and instead all I am doing is fighting its installation. Is Sun giving up on Base? I would like to know now before I invest any more effort into it. I hope not. I have been banking on your commitment to oo.org and am working to make these tools effective and provide meaningful feedback. If one can't get this software running on the most popular opensource Linux OS, what can they get it running on? Your throwing your hands up in the air leaves me with the impression that maybe Base is done for. Is Sun giving up on Base? I sure would like to know this now. I hope not. I want it to thrive. I will try this upgrade of Java approach. If it doesn't work I will probably have to start considering just giving up on Base for good. I'll let you know how it went. Thanks for your help so far. I will get back to you when I have had a chance to test this java upgrade. Since there is no specific Debian approach to this JRE update to _18 I am really leary and skeptical that anything meaningful will come of it except more wheel spinning. I am running out of time... This is a real disappointment. I have put a lot of effort into my Base db over the last year. I am starting to think I just need to cut my losses and look for another approach. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker.
