No, you can KEEP Arts in KDE (actually, I just turn it off, Alsa's smart
enough to handle things sent it's way). This is one of the ADVANTAGES of
using Alsa vs OSS/Free (though I've got the paid version licensed, I just
haven't compared it to Alsa yet). OSS/Free can NOT handle the sounds
necessarily created by Arts or Esound (from what I've found out). Therefore,
OSS/Free often conflicts and causes greater confusion than is necessary. I,
myself didn't realize this untill I started using Drake's Cooker packages and
found that things just weren't what they should be one morning:P

My advice: As I said before, wait a couple of weeks, download the new Drake
(their release date is like Sept 19th at the latest) which ALREADY is moving
towards Alsa support, and has the latest kernel source and everything, if you
insist on using Drake.

Remember, also that there's some of us that enjoy music inside of the console
as well (mpg123, play, etc), and this is why you need a sound driver OUTSIDE
of your Xwin system's driver.

Welcome to the world of continually developing software. This is what Open
Source is all about, creative thinking, people joining together, working on
projects, sometimes releasing, two, three versions a year.. As far as I'm
aware, Alsa WILL become the kernel standard, beginning with 2.5(??), pretty
much throwing out the older, more undeveloped OSS/Free
