That used to be the situation. The alsa people fought very hard to get the
sound coupled to the kernel, since those modules really are a part of the
kernel. What you suggest  goes in the opposite direction.

Yes, it is a lot of work. The key thing that needs to happen is that the
alsa needs to get into the kernel more quickly. But with distros, they have
about a two year time lag. Ie, the distro freezes so that debugging can
proceed about 4 or 5 months before release ( especially on something as
crucial as the kenrel) and that kernel uses an alsa that is 3 or 4 nonths
old, and you install the distro 6 or 7 mohtns after release.

Ie, I really think it is alsa that needs to make it easier to simply
install one single driver if needed. It is often possible, but not always.

Nope. That'll be FC7. I do not think FC releases new kernels for an old
release. Too much danger of breaking things.
