That used to be the situation. The alsa people fought very hard to get the sound coupled to the kernel, since those modules really are a part of the kernel. What you suggest goes in the opposite direction. > > Whatever happens, it's quite a lot of work for someone. The key thing that needs to happen is that the alsa needs to get into the kernel more quickly. But with distros, they have about a two year time lag. Ie, the distro freezes so that debugging can proceed about 4 or 5 months before release ( especially on something as crucial as the kenrel) and that kernel uses an alsa that is 3 or 4 nonths old, and you install the distro 6 or 7 mohtns after release. Ie, I really think it is alsa that needs to make it easier to simply install one single driver if needed. It is often possible, but not always. > > The alternative for the snd-riptide module under Fedora is to wait for > 2.6.17 to finalise and then for FC5 to pick up that kernel. That'll be FC7. I do not think FC releases new kernels for an old release. Too much danger of breaking things. _______________________________________________ Alsa-user mailing list [email protected] https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/alsa-user
