True, but it sure explains a lot of things :-).

I'd have to ask a local expert, which I'll do Monday if you haven't
got it figured by then.  But if you can do it without a lot of trouble,
I sure think it's worth a shot putting the RAID all by its lonesome and
see if it helps.

You might also look for any messages it kicks out during boot, especially
things like transfer rates.
