I think I got it now.
Chart, as an adjective, as in chart pane, chart sheet, chart widow,
etc.. As a noun, it means a chart window.

As I understood it, reducing the number of panes didn't add any
speed benefit because unless they were actually being viewed they
had no drain on resources.
