The people you'll find on the various android discussion groups are
not average users. I'm sure there are android users who would rather
spend 4 hours writing something themselves than pay someone $1 for the
convenience of not having to spend those 4 hours, but I don't think
that applies to the userbase in general.
I have a free app in the market, and the feedback I'm getting is
mostly from users who are not tech-savvy at all, and hopefully even
those do-it-yourselfers will eventually realize that their time is
worth more than 25 cents an hour... :)
