If you want to be completely certain, root the thing and take a
nandroid backup. There is a one-click-root app that will work on your
phone. What you do is you run the one-click-root app, which gives you
the option to back up your existing recovery partition and install
cyanogen recovery 1.4, you then reboot into the new recovery mode,
take the nandroid backup (which writes a full system backup to the
sdcard), reboot back into normal, run the root program again, and
restore the backup of the recovery partition.
