I guess one can update /etc/ipkg/*-feed.conf to get access to 2008.6
packages and the packages required.

I'm quite keen on getting these programs installed, too, but before
giving that method a try, I would like to backup my root file system ...
I neither want to end up with an unbootable system nor with an unstable
one (and I got no idea to what extend the 2008.6 packages can be
considered stable).

Can one back up the root file system (in my case, on internal flash
memory) by making a dd of the internal flash device to a file on the CF
card, creating a corresponding reflash.ctl and using the bootloader to
reflash / in case something goes wrong?

Best,

        Guenter
