I don't know the internals of the Spitz ... but I've experienced
something similar on the HX4700, where kernel modules are upgraded but
the new kernel is not installed. That also rendered the device
unbootable.
Hence, instead of ipkg upgrade I'm using a script (posted a few weeks
ago) that excludes kernel module packages and packages that depend on
them from the upgrades.
