Hi Claire,

You could use Meta-Update. A job like this would take about 5 lines of
scripting:

[Desktops]
Query = BE, BMC:BMC_AssetBase, "some field' = "some criteria that selects
the records"
Update  = BE
Merge   = Yes, NoWorkflow
Assign  = asg

[asg]
Category   = Desktop

You could go further by parameterising the query and assignment attributes.

The gist of it is to use Merge which the import tool uses (though indeed it
does not allow you to turn off Merge workflow.

So, you could do it manually by doing an advanced query on BMC:BMC_AssetBase
to select those records that are to be (say) Desktops, generating a CSV of
the Ids, using the Merge tool to assign "Desktop" to those Ids. And so on.
I think the import tool of 6.3 allowed you to specify a constant for
assignments but am not sure. If not, just add a column in excel for the
category.

Note that there are issues with what you want to do in the first place. For
example, it IS a change to a CI and so it may want to be audited or a Diary
entry appended indicating that the change occurred.

Both these can be added to the Meta-Update script above. A trial license is
free and would accomplish your goal.

Also note that the Category value may be in other tables. I just checked
SHR:Association and you're in luck. It's not there. Certainly in 7 it
would be a tougher job and you would have to effect the same updates as the
workflow would have effected (easily done with Meta-Update).

The list of schemas with the Category field is (through a simple egrep):
Note this list does not include fields which may have the category value in
them (such as SHR:Audit) and will include other Category fields not related
to this category field.

Cheers

Subject: Update Record and not change Modify Date

Other than going in the wrong way and doing it at the DB level, is there a
way for me to update/change 30K records without changing the last modified
name and date fields?

We are starting to do things the right way and are making the distinction
between a Laptop and a Desktop Computer in an asset record.
So, I will have to go in and change the records to reflect a different
Category name.
