Actually, it makes perfect sense.

America is a representative form of government, not Athenian Democary 
where the citizens vote on every issue through the year.

The candidate that wins votes the issue, not you.

Since I won't be there to vote each issue, and I can't know what 
issues will arrive, the best I can do is try to elect a candidate that 
thinks like me and shares my values.

Thats the only way I can be sure my interests on each issue will be 
protected.

That's why political parties are so good.  At least I know people like 
me gravtitate to the same party as me, so even if I don't have time to 
fully assess the candidate, I at least have something to go on.
