I think it's not so much overall machine requirements - as sizing the ASSP install for the machine. I have a V2 installation running on a production server WITH a mail server on the same machine - this machine is a five year old desktop, and has 1 gig of RAM - only 600MB of which is available to ASSP. I have V2 set up to run with two worker threads, and it runs perfectly, with 200MB left free. Granted, this is a very low volume server (<400 msgs/day) but the fact is, it is not so much V2 that has larger system requirements - it is V2, in combination with server load. My main server processes almost 100,000 msgs/day, and it runs with 15 threads and has much higher memory and CPU load.
There is a fair amount of tuning to be done with V2. I think one of the most important things that could be done to guarantee the success of V2 would be to publish it with as many "sample" configurations as possible, so that people have something close to their requirements to start with, instead of trying to start to configure it from scratch.
