Fedora 8 definitely works. (most of the stuff should even build on a 64bit host--but not everything yet). If you have problems with VMWare scripts as well, perhaps something is corrupt on your box? Ubuntu should work fine. I know Kris and others have used Ubuntu in the past. I use either CentOS or Fedora, but nothing in the buildroot environment should be distro specific. If it looks like some files are missing, why don't you delete your local svn repository and grab a fresh copy (or do an svn update). You should do an svn update frequently anyway as changes are constantly being made.
