Re: When is the last time anyone has read a braille book?
I've been doing some digging on the subject myself, didn't quite fully understand some of the Patent designs until you mentioned the PiezoElectric Actuators, so thanks for that, heh. A number of manufacturing companies i've checked don't seem to offer a price point without getting a quote. I did manage to find a Chinese manufacturer through Alibaba.com operating out of Shanghai though, they seem to sell other models of Piezo actuators for 50 cents per 2 pieces, minimum 100 piece order for some components. Anything resembling strips though needs a price quote and a minimum order of 500 pieces, assuming its the same price of 50 cents per 2 strips, that would work out to about 125$ plus shipping, assuming your going with a Piezoelectric actuators and not running into any braille display patent issues.
@Theo
In theory, but without actual sales numbers its difficult so say if their abusing a monopoly, however likely that may be. It could be just as likely
that the number of sales is so low that the number of units they would sell wouldn't cover the costs of staying in business without a high price point offset by government funding. Either way, all the more reason to work on making cheaper and more affordable displays.
