Whatever NVDA can do I should be able to do it too because I'm using the same speech synthesizer engine as NVDA. However this fine tuning of the voice is not on my high-priority list right now.
I explored the first floor and cant find the stairs to the next level. Are there any hints to see where you should search?
On the first few floors there shouldn't be any hidden passages, so if you can't find the stairs make sure you have explored the whole floor. If you press x key and it says "I see no path for further exploration", then it means the floor was full explored. As for deeper levels I will see to remove hidden tiles so there is no need to search at all. It doesn't really add much to the game, but just makes it tedious.
Could you change a little the behaviour of the space key?
SPACE is the same as ESCAPE key, its function is to cancel actions, exit from inventory, close message history, and stuff like that. To find out health status you only need to press ENTER.
