Hi Grryf.
I know the contracts tell you the distance, but that unfortunately doesn't help when you just complete a contract and are stuck in deep space or when your trying to find planets to explore, though darren on audeasy did say that the planets are listed in order of closest to you so at least I won't end up mby mistake travelling halfway across the galaxy again and having to thump my crew repeatedly to stop them mutanying.
