Classes or specialisations are generally only a good idea if you can be sure that your player base will be large and diverse, especially if this specialisation ties in with group activities. But I agree, some form of character development, like improving skills so you can get better at certain activities would be nice to have. If missions or combat assignments are ever a thing there should of course be some reason why you do them, it doesn't even have to change every time you do it but I think it would add more atmosphere to have a blerb with the mission that looks like a little briefing. not just go to coordinates x y and z and blow up five pirates, instead, a long range hauler has reported sightings of pirate activity near them. They are unable to adequately defend themselves and have released a distress beacon. You must arrive before the pirates close in for the kill and deal with them.
