@20 if you want reliability use tcp (http/s is built around it).
undead assault uses a library called PodSixNet which is a simple wrapper around python's socket library and it uses tcp as well.
if you want a reliable/encrypted networking, use tcp with encryption to send the packets (the way of encrypting is dependent on you. maybe you can encrypt with the hash of the username etc)
@17 networking is not a thing to be toned down or so. because you need to know how much to send/receive, should know about buffers,, and so on.
the fact that people say never trust the client is entirely true. because they can cheat, or modify the variables.
