No, you're misunderstanding. The outboard box would do just the same as
the PC. The correction would not be any different. You would still
measure the room impulse response in the same way, but apply the
correction on the outboard device rather than on the server.

I'm not saying it's better or worse - just pointing out that you seem to
have misunderstood somewhat.
