You are absolutely right. You normally need some form of volume control
when using a DCX crossover. Search on the internet, a lot of solution
but not very easy. There is a yahoo forum:

One of the easiest solutions are the attenuators at the analogue
outputs of the DCX from Scott Endler:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze4c5pt/.
You use them to adjust the levels (although the DCX permits a bit of
adjustment) and you can use the volume control of the DCX for fine
tuning.
Personally I'm using an ALPS 6 gang stereo 10 kohms potentiometer
installed in the DCX.
