Here's my thoughts on mods...I think that pretty much any piece of gear
can be modded to deliver better performance than the stock unit,
because there is always a better part out there, or a better way of
designing something if you take away the constraint of a pricepoint (or
a safety constraint, quite blatantly). I've heard numerous modded
components (and own a modded transport) and all have offered
significant improvement over the stock unit. The question for many
people comes down to whether you'd rather have the modder's warranty or
the manufacturer's warranty, whether the mods violate any kind of UL
rating codes that would void your homeowner's insurance if it caused a
fire, etc.

Certainly in the post that highdudgeon references at the start of this
thread, I know that the modder in question is in fact a great guy who
does great work...and I'm sure he believes what he wrote to reflect his
real opinion. He isn't trying to hide his identity or his motivation to
post; on the forum he posted it, he has a reputation for being a great
guy that people can trust. That said, as with everything in audio,
opinions and tastes vary, system synergy is extremely important, and
one man's nirvana is another man's hell.
