Good post Marc. On a related point, it's worth looking at the resistance to Windows Vista - Dell are now offering XP. When your year-old pocket PC phone, with MS Windows, doesn't work with your new laptop, you are unhappy - and Windows is a monopoly far more solid than the fragile allegiance of record companies. There's just no appetite for being forced to spend money where you had not planned to. Expecting people to go for DRM off the back of new equipment is plain mad. Look at digital TV here in the UK - it costs £30 for a set-top box, and it gives you loads of new channels and pretty good radio. What's the take-up? Surprisingly low for such a no-brainer. Hardly anyone wants 24/96, DRM'd or not. Look on bittorrent: everything is MP3. The notion of a free 128kbps vs DRM'd £££ 24/96 business model is laughable - 99% of people would take the MP3 and never pay a bean, and be dead happy.
