Exactly.  And as far as I can see it would ONLY be a timing issue.  The
server could theoretically send whatever it likes to each channel of
each SB, so left bass and left treble could certainly be sent to one
SB.  After that, appropriate amping could send the SB outputs to the
correct driver units.  So amps with appropriate characteristics could
be used for each driver type.  Such an approach would be scalable for
multi-drive speakers too.
