I have to disagree with at least the first part of this statement. About 4 years ago, I was curious about this mosquito device (in my mid-50's, then)---had just read something about it----and found a number of audio clips of them on websites. So, I played a few and it bothered me plenty (and I took a blind test with my teenaged daughters administering it and passed with 100% accuracy)! Don't know whether or not I could hear it now, but I suspect I'm not the only "adult" that could hear it.
