There has been quite a lot of scientific studies and tests. Bit depth only affects dynamic range/SNR, and 16 bits already give more than any source material needs. You need more than 16 bits temporarily for processing headroom in DSP, and it makes recording easier if you have the headroom, but once processed, 16 bits is more than enough for any music.
