A couple of comments were of interest of late on telco related forums:

The proposed 3G system WCDMA is a more common standard than CDMA with EVDO, on the 800Mhz band its coverage is to be "respectable" ie bit less than CDMA, far better than GSM.

As they need the 800Mhz band this is also why CDMA must die as they need the spectrum space.

3G will allow for better international roaming agreements, except for Kiwis with CDMA.

In theory 3G has better data throughput, in practice in a moderately loaded system EVDO is better in real terms for download speed.

But perhaps the real reason...

CDMA costs ~3-4 times the cost of GSM in CAPEX

3G WCDMA is far cheaper to implement than a CDMA EVDO system, particularly when it is applied everywhere.

Currently lots of opinions floating about probably all best consumed with the proverbial grain of salt.

3 more years of indecision with gaining a reasonable rural RF data service
<sigh>

Cheers

Don
