On the Standard Cirrus Sailplanes web site http://standardcirrus.org/ down the bottom is a link to early canopy ejection trials and the design of the Roeger Hook Project , i wont go into how they did it but the 4 odd video's explain it really well.

Notice how in the last video once the pilot gets the clue to open by hinging sideways, the canopy departs easily?

It goes rearwards sure but if the hinges were in place until open it would depart cleanly. Somehow our friend at DG sees this as a disadvantage of side hinged canopies when quite severe measures have to be designed in to get front opening canopies to jettison at all. He also admits that very few retrofits of the required parts have been done whereas the side hinged canopies can be jettisoned easily by a simple change in technique.
