I would not use Away3D at all for that (and I'm usually pretty fond of using Away3D ;)) because there's little need to do that in full 3D. Just create a very simple custom engine that you draw using drawTriangles(). It should be no more than a couple of hundred lines of code to create the engine. I've done similar things and it's really not hard because you don't have to worry about rotation, or possibly even depth, so the math is really simple.
