Dunno about SuSE or RH RPMS, but Mandrake's situation seems MUCH better, or at least they have lucked out... If CPAN doesn't work from your RPM installed perl, then the RPMs are kaka, pure and simple! Perl has to be pretty darn broken before CPAN stops working.
There are a few things to watch out for. 1 is that most distros now include libxml2 2.6.x which is broken with AxKit AFAIK. I had to downgrade to 2.5.11 RPMs and then things got much better on MDK 9.2. Remember to make sure that you have the corresponding devel RPMs!!! Its pretty easy to end up with library version X and headers version Y!
