Ahah!

With some more poking around I discovered the problem was that I was missing some of
the gcc packages - specifically the ones required for g++. Nothing to do with expat
after all! The configure script output was just a plain lie!

So now I'm over that, I'm getting a very specific error -- included below -- from
Sablot (I get the same with 0.98, 1.0 and 1.0.1 versions of Sablot) because of the
version of expat I have used. I installed that specific, older, version because the
http://www.axkit.org/wiki/view/AxKit/AxKitRedHat9# page includes a specific patch for
it which I thought might be necessary for Axkit to work.

So what do I do here .... remove my version of expat and upgrade it to a new version?
If so, will it need patching again? Will the patch on the wiki page still work
(guessing not)?

Cheers,

"Getting closer" Peter.
