Judi; Thank you for this information. I do have a birth date and have
previously contacted the state archives with no success. I suspect the last
name was misspelled as I have tried looking under both the husband's and the
wife's surname with no luck. Since I have finally found that his family
comes from Sao Jorge and the records are now online, finding his birth
certificate would just be a personal satisfaction rather than something that
is needed to trace his line. I guess I was just thinking that browsing
through the newspaper during that time period, I just might get lucky.
Thank you very much for taking your time to respond to my query, Sam J

Sam, The largest newspaper in RI is the Providence Journal, www.projo.com.
They have an archives, but it is no longer free to search. The Providence
Public Library has newspapers back to at least 1940, but only on microfilm.
If you know actual dates, the RI State Archives has birth and marriage
records at least 100 years old, and death records at least 50 years old.
The cost is only a few dollars each. They are very helpful there, but ask
that you send you request in writing, or you can search yourself. They are
at
337 Westminster St., Providence, RI 02903.

Thanks Cheri. I should have written my question a bit more clearly. I was
really asking if anyone knew of free newspaper sites that might include
Illinois or Rhode Island newspapers where I could look for possibly
information on my ancestors. Just kind of a stab in the dark to flesh out
the lives of my ancestors. Thanks for your quick reply, Sam
