The California State Library History Room has databases online that will tell
you what is available there, but not online searchable databases. Look here to
find if the newspaper, city directory etc is available :

Shirley,  Is the CA STATE ARCHIVES on line?  I am going to do some research the
end of January.  Starting off in Solvang as we have time share there.  Thought
I would check out Santa Maria and Guadulupe to see if they have a historical
society that would have clues of the people in the area during the 1900's.
Also heard my G Grandfather went bankrupt so need to find out where to go for
that.  Only have a week but want to make a list so I can be productive during
that time.  I would love to find my Grandmothers marriage record but if you
only know the date and not the town in Ca they we married in would that be in
the State Archives?  Any guideance would be appreciated.  I think Sacramento is
to far from where we have to stay to go there.  Thank you, Vivian
