Most of the Indexes I have seen on the films in the Acores are indexed by
first name. In an index you will see all the first names of the babies that are
baptized arranged in alphabetical order with the parents’ names. They will also
appear in chronological order. In this type of index you will have to go down
a long list of girls named Maria and look at the parent’s names to find the one
you want. Then you will have to go to the book and page to look at the actual
record. I have seen some marriage indexes arranged like this as well but they
are always arranged by grooms names. So you will see all the men that have a
name beginning with Jose followed by their last name and the brides name. They
are usually in chronological order. So you will look down the list till you
find your Jose de Sousa that married a Maria de Jesus. Once again you will have
to go to the book and page to look at the record to see if that is the one you
want. I have seen other lists that just list the marriages in order as they
appear in the book so you will have to look through the whole list to find the
one you want.

Indexes at best are spotty in the Acores. Some parishes have good indexes and
others have no indexes at all. Some indexes are listed as indexes and others
are at the last page(s) of the book and you would have no idea they existed
unless you looked.

An index is an alphabetical list of names, typically found at the end of a
book. The book is usually chronological. So the index usually lists the content
by name. Or at least now-a-days, in America.

I don't know in what parish you are looking. If you are on FamilySearch or
Ancestry.com, they don't have parishes, but they have state birth, marriages,
and deaths. They have first and last name fields. You just fill them in.

If you are talking about the Azores, my answer is the same as before:
Some are chronological by date, some are by name, generally first. The headers
at the top of the page tell you (like the guide words in a dictionary). But I
don't know which index you are looking at, so I can't be sure.

You only responded with Nossa Senhora do Rosario and no link. I don't believe
there would be a John Mello in those indices, as John is an Anglicization.

Let me redo my question, what is the purpose behind indexing ? in some of the
parishes but not all.If i am looking for a John Mello how would going to
indexing help me in finding him or does it.

Can anyone here please explain how do you use the indices to find someone in
the records. Do you look for the first or last name.

Thank you Paul
