Enriched Formula Makes Babies Smarter

Adding two fatty acids found in breast milk to commercial formula improves
infants' intelligence scores, according to a new study in the March issue of the
journal Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology.
Researchers from the Retina Foundation of the Southwest in Dallas, Texas,
measured the intelligence of 56 18-month-old babies who were divided into three
groups and fed a specific formula for four months, beginning at five days of
age.
One group received formula with DHA and AA, two fatty acids found in breast milk
and supplied via the placenta to the developing fetus. Another received formula
with only DHA, while a control group received commercial formula with no fatty
acids added.
Researchers than measured the children's intelligence and motor skills using
standard intelligence tests. The three groups had similar scores in psychomotor
development such as walking, jumping, and drawing, but there were differences in
their memory and problem-solving scores. The children in the control group
scored a 98, slightly below the U.S. average of 100. The children in the DHA
group scored an average of 102, slightly above average, and the group that got
the formula with both fatty acids scored an average of 105.
Researchers don't know if the higher scores are will hold up as the babies get
older, but they plan to re-evaluate the group when they turn 4 to see if there
are still any differences.
Many countries currently add these fatty acids, which are believed to have a
role in the development of the nervous system, to their commercial infant
formulas. In an Associated Press report, the Food and Drug Administration said
it is currently reviewing the research and may issue new regulations for U.S.
formula makers within the next eight months. The Mead Johnson Nutritional Center
provided other funding for this NIH-supported study, including the formula.
