AFAIK the display code does not use any overlays,
just the gui stuff.  And from testing I would say
the fortifying takes just 15% of the time that
formatting requires.

About 6s for 1900 records on my Sun Ultar 5.

But you can interrupt BBDB during formatting which results
in a "corrupt" *BBDB* buffer.
