Hm, I hunted for some references in the mailing list archives, but I didn't find anything useful. Perhaps somebody else remembers. I think that this must have been around the time when bbdb-gui was introduced for Emacs. Somebody then complained, and later we saw that he was displaying all of his records. He had been doing that before, though, so the only difference was the fontification.
