If a file has auto-save data, emacs gives you a warning message such as ~/.bbdb has auto save data; consider M-x recover-this-file Nonetheless in such a case emacs allows you to read the file and even edit and save it. -- Yet I am wondering once more: how do you end up in such a situation (more regularly?) that emacs leaves behind the auto-save data? If you quit an "emacs -Q", it will ask you whether you want to save any unsaved buffers. To the best of my knowledge, emacs must crash or you must kill it to leave behind auto-save data (or you explicitly say "no" when emacs is asking you to save a buffer).
