CVS workflow also goes in a "checkout, edit, commit" cycle, where
you get the files from the repository using either the "cvs
checkout" command to get a new working copy or the "cvs update"
command to update an existing one, make any changes you need, and
then commit or save the changes you made back to the repository.
Anyone else who had a working copy of the repository checked-out
for their own use could then do an update and would have your
versions of the files. There's a whole lot of "black magic" that
takes place on the repository side of things, and that's all
covered in the CVS Book, but you don't really need to worry about
it for now.
I'm suspicious MacOS X ships with CVS preinstalled. If not then the X-
Code option on the system DVD will bring it in.
Am not sure how others do it but I have ssh access to the web server.
So What Works For Me(tm) is to host my own repository, checkout/
update my working copy, edit, commit, then ssh to the server and do a
"cvs update" from there where the CVSROOT is something
like :ssh:myownmachine/path-to-cvsroot/Project
If for some reason I hack a file in-place on the server then "cvs
commit" to send that back to my repository. Thats basically what you
are going to do for remote collaboration. The repository is the
definitive source. You and she have temporary working copies. And a
3rd "temporary" copy is what the webserver serves the public.
CVS works very well for html so long as one doesn't use a code
generator which totally rewrites the html for every little change.
CVS really shines in being able to provide visible diffs between
versions. Something non-BBEdit users are not as used to as BBEdit
users. These diffs are very necessary when both of you change a file
at the same time. Needless to say it isn't as sweet for graphics files.
If one must use a PC, then TortoiseCVS plus WinMerge make life bearable.
As for Subversion vs CVS, the biggest difference casual users see is
that one is spelled cvs and the other is spelled svn.
