There was a knock-down, drag-out discussion of this a couple of months ago, and the consensus seemed to be that if you're just getting started, you should use Subversion instead of CVS. You might try checking out the older messages on the Bare Bones site.

I agree entirely. I use both, with different projects, and the move is very largely to SVN. Before long, CVS will not be a majority source control option. SVN, in my experience, is more effective, anyway.

*** Tip: (it took me ages to work this out)

Commands in the source control menus of BBEdit will not be available for a file, unless that file is in a directory with a source control folder (CVS, .svn [these are invisible from Open or Save dialogues]).

In other words, unless that directory has been checked out (svn checkout URL/DIR, svn co URL/DIR) nothing in that directory can be updated, committed etc.

So, before you can use source control, you need to check out your working copy. Check out the highest directory you need: you don't need to check out the whole project unless you're going to be working on files up to the root (highest) level.

For example, I don't check out the whole Gnome repository: I check out individual modules, sometimes only their po directory (moldule_name/po) if I'm only working on an existing translation. Once you have a checked-out directory, you can save newer files over old ones, then commit the changes, and/or add new files, Add them from the SVN menu, then commit them. Watch how the menu commands become active, once you open a file that IS in a directory with a source control sub-directory (CVS, .svn).

See this straightforward and excellent SVN site:

You already have svn installed in OSX, and I'd recommend the SVN GUI program svnx:

Please feel free to ask basic questions: they can't be any more basic than the ones I ask. ;)

You'll find source control really cool, once you get started. It's a really effective and useful process. :)
