First off, let me say how much I hate adding to this thread.
I think the real question here, do you really think BB saw a spike
in sales
as a result of the nag code implementation?
I doubt they saw a spike in sales, but I bet they saw a spike in
their sales:support cost ratio. Several years ago I worked for a
place that sold a software package that started at $3,000 and went
way up from there. They sold a multi-user license to a Chinese
university. Their support costs for that sale went up an
extraordinary amount due to pirating and other misuse of the license
by the university and other users not associated with the university.
The cracked license was available on the internet (and likely still
is). There was no way to force the university to purchase the
appropriate number of licenses, so they essentially dropped all
support (and consequently all future sales) for the product for the
university. Needless to say, there was no good outcome for the
company in this situation.
I doubt that Bare Bones' support costs are the same as the package
I'm comparing it to, but their support is certainly worthwhile the
few times I've had to ask for it over the years. Needless to say,
that isn't free.
I never have felt any of this anti-piracy stuff does anything more
than bug
the legit users. Pirated software is not directly related to a
lost sale.
No, but it likely contributes to increased support costs.
We are all legit users here, I would bet no one would be willing to
circumvent the nag screen, I would also bet, there are many a
tutorial out
there to show you how to block those packets from any app. Those
who want
to get past this will, in the end, it only aggravates us legitimate
users.
I may even go as far as thinking it only invigorates the cracker,
its a new
challenge, one they will no doubt break in short order.
Agreed 100%.
