I hate to inject facts into a good discussion, but please allow me to try. :-)
======================================================================== [The complete text of the license is in the user manual for whomever'd like to follow along.] License: You may use the program and documentation on not more than two (2) machines and copy the program and documentation into any machine-readable or printed form for backup or support of your use of the program and documentation on either or both machines, provided that no copy of the program and documentation may be used by anyone other than you. You may not use or copy the program or documentation, or any copy thereof, in whole or in part, except as provided in this Agreement. You also may not modify or transfer (whether or not for consideration) the program or documentation, or any copy thereof, in whole or in part. If you use, copy, modify, or transfer the program or documentation, or any copy thereof, in whole or part, except as expressly provided for in this agreement, your license is automatically terminated. [...] ======================================================================== Thus, as we see, the license allows simultaneous use of the software on TWO (2) machines at once, as does the software itself. (We expect, but don't attempt to enforce in any manner, that if you've got the software running on 2 Macs, you--the licensed user--are the person using both copies, not you and your colleague/boss/spouse/etc.) Prior to BBEdit 8, the license actually specified and allowed use of the software on only ONE (1) machine. Since in practice we've always considered simultaneous use of the product by the licensed user on two machines (say, home & work, or desktop & portable) to be a perfectly reasonable activity, we explicitly expanded the scope of the license agreement to allow this usage. However, when you attempt to run _more than two copies_ of the app simultaneously _with a single user license_, the software will detect this, and prompt you to quit one of the running copies before you can launch another. We did this feeling that it presented the best compromise between convenience for customers, and the situation which Rich previously described.
