problem appears to be fixed; I edited the firewall and set the whole ethernet interface to trusted, and that then allowed me to upgrade the firmware and connect; Does this version need more access than previous versions? 9000 TCP and 8483 UDP/TCP were both enabled to the network and I know that I could access 9000 at least.
