/root survives firmware upgrade and vol+ emergency firmware fallback. 
It does not service factory reset.

It would be easy to add a startup script to run changes automatically,
but then if the update was bad, only a factory reset would save you, and
you wouldn't know if the base had changed and the update not applied. 
So I haven't done it.  Look in /etc/init.d/rcS to see what gets run if
it exists.
