Plastic fenders have worked fine for us as well... and I don't feel
bad about notching plastic... I had to notch a space in the rear to
run our B&M bottle generators.For my son's 613 (another early 80s
Trek) I went with larger fenders and had to "customize them" a bit
more... but it also allowed him to run 32's. The bikes appear to be
designed for 28s.

The 620 with the canti mounts and 47 cm chainstays is really a special
bike. You will have to use a long spacer with the rear fender (where
it attaches to the chainstay bridge). One fellow on another list had a
really interesting solution to long spacer installations since they
tend to conflict with horizontal dropouts... he devised a spring
system so the fender could be flexed an inch. So... expect to have fun
engineering this.

Also... you might want to look into this little nugget... that 620
fork will support this, though bars might need adjusting...
