When I made my inquiries a couple of years ago I contacted Community Car's
insurer (at the time I was planning to get rid of a car and wouldn't have
under- or uninsured motorist coverage or equivalent combinations of health,
disability, property, etc.). Community Car's insurance policy does not
provide this coverage (at least did not 2 years ago) and I tried to get a
dialog going with someone at Community Car about the issue, I was serious
about joining, but this (and getting a 2 week vacation rental once a year)
became the fatal flaw in that plan. To this day, Community Car's website FAQ
(http://www.communitycar.com/faq/#Whataboutinsurance) does not educate
members of this potential gap in their coverage... which IMHO is why it is
appropriate during this year's promotion theme "Car Free University"
(http://www.enactwi.org/) people start thinking about this.

Another recourse if you were a hit-and-run victim and had no insurance might
be the Crime Victims Compensation Fund through the Department of Justice
(State of Wisconsin).

Glad to see the dialog is progressing on this list. It is a very arcane
subject most people don't think about. (I happen to be shopping around for
-gag- auto insurance right now...)

Even people with auto insurance may not have coverage if they are disabled
or unable to work due to a crash. I didn't for years, because I drove a
crappy car, and only had liability insurance. I never had uninsured driver
insurance, because if my car was totaled, well, so be it.

And yes, there are products out there for people who don't own their own
cars. If your insurance carrier doesn't offer it, perhaps you could mention
that others do. That implied threat to go elsewhere with your insurance
dollars tends to focus the mind of your insurance agent.

Besides, there are lots of other ways to get insurance for disability/loss
of income.

Considering the cost of owning and operating even a cheap, paid for car,
paying the insurance premiums for disability/loss of income insurance has
got to be cheaper, so that's no reason to not go car-free.
