My (repeated) mistake on the streets. I'm talking about the University/Randall intersection. The signs I described are on the bike lane divider, facing westbound traffic, just west of the intersection.

The signs I think you refer to are in the city’s ROW, so it will be up to the city to change things, but we (UW Transportation Services) work closely with the city on locations and issues close to campus. Also Patrick, your multiple references to the “sign on the bike lane/Johnson St divider” make me think you are talking about the intersection of JOHNSON/RANDALL, and not UNIVERSITY/RANDALL? But the news article refers to University Ave and Randall, as does the subject line of Robbie’s original post. Robby, could you clarify the location you witnessed? Another point – the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/) places restrictions on the height of various signs used in various contexts. I’d have to look more closely at the MUTCD to be certain, but I’m pretty sure that the existing signs cannot be raised 6’ (unless perhaps they are made as large as overhead signs on highways), the thinking being that if small signs are up that high, no one will see them. I had mentioned in an earlier post that I thing the sign on the bike lane/Johnson St divider that is just west of the intersection may block drivers' view of oncoming bikes. Well, I drove through there this morning and it's actually TWO signs, one on top of each other. One is an obscure warning of an upcoming lane change (I think), the other ironically enough is a "wrong way" sign to keep bikers from going west in the bike lane. My points being: 1) Those signs don't seem real vital, and certainly not worth the hazard they're causing, and 2) If they must be there, couldn't the signage at least be 6' or higher so as not to block the drivers' sight line?
