Troy;
As you and many others on this list may know, the Bicycle Federation of
Wisconsin's Bike Summit is next week. This is a chance for cyclists to meet
their state representatives to express to them the importance of cycling in
Wisconsin whether it's recreational or utilitarian. But as the saying goes,
"all politics is local." Given how agitated people are on the state level, I
have suggested on inviting local officials out for a bike ride around the local
municipality to demonstrate where the strengths of cycling are and where they
can be stronger. Maybe the heads of several bike groups in town can take some
of our local officials new and veteran for a series of rides of show and tell
of local transportation and resulting land use infrastructure. I'm more
concerned that we discuss the costs to the city and its tax payers for handling
moving traffic and also parked traffic. My 2.5¢.

here's an idea...how about we call a "State of Cycling in Madison, Spring 2011"
event and make sure the new Mayor can be there....utilizing info on what the
new zoning code has in the works, city staff updates on directions being taken,
updates on Platinum Bike committee pursuits with the hopes of creating a
logical structural process going forward for communications, goal setting
and periodic reviews....???  We're all creative and committed bike
advocates...its time we stop flaming others and each other on list serves and
get to the "getting things done" phase....thanks for caring.
